Held every two years in accordance with our bylaws, Old Antarctic Explorers Association reunions serve two purposes; the first is to conduct Association business with officers' meetings and a general assembly meeting so members have a chance to hear what is happening and to be heard; and the second is to offer an experience and opportunity to reconnect with old friends, hear the stories, and enjoy the fellowship, and at the same time soak up some of the "local color". Our next reunion scheduled for 2028 is already in work and is being planned for Jacksonville, FL.
This 2026 reunion took place 14-17 September in Linthicum Heights, MD. Planned and executed by OAEA Vice President Dr. Dewey Painter, the reunion came off without a hitch, or so it seemed! The reunion venue was BWI Airport Springhill Suites by Marriott located about halfway between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Convenient to both D.C. and Baltimore, Dr. Painter selected well; this was an excellent host venue with an all you could eat breakfast, indoor pool, fitness center, and plenty of parking. Dining options within easy walking distance included fast food, a sports bar, Mexican food, Afghani food, a specialty sandwich shop, a deli, a Starbucks; and excellent dinner dining was also just a short drive from the hotel.
The schedule of events included an opening night icebreaker, speakers, a tour, and a closing night banquet. There was plenty of down time at breakfast each morning and in the hospitality room for socializing. Dave Hazard opened the store daily with OAEA merchandise. There was also a silent auction for some donated items.
The main tour was a trip to Washington to tour the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space museum. Along with many historical displays, it was surprising to see a “life sized” Star Wars X-Wing fighter on display! Over half the attendees took advantage of the tour.
We had two speakers. President Wayne White had a presentation covering three years of life as the winter over station manager at South Pole; and Bill Hughes talked about living conditions when he was on the ice with VX-6 as an Otter and helo pilot during the period from 1959-1961.
The reunion wrapped up with the traditional last evening banquet. Goodbyes were said, and the party was over...until next time. See you in Jax!
